I’ve got a pilot for myself so that I can talk to my Vietnamese friends, but that language, like others, is yet to be perfected.I think those people at Waverly are working very hard, and we shouldn’t put them down just for the first try, it may take awhile, but we all have to be patient.

Language is…Difficult. How will machines treat idioms? Political jokes? Poetry? “The grass is always greener” is nonsense in most languages, a non sequiter (which is a French bon mot). I think this idea flattens far too much, turning the pitch and rumble of language and it’s undermeanings into data points completely misses the point. Language is basically a negotiated art, maybe AI will be able to translate someday (strong AI, not weak AI built of big data sets), but I bet it will still feel “cold” to the recipient.

Have you checked out Google Translate lately John? I ask because I think that it has gotten better. No, I don’t think that there will ever be a device that can translate perfectly 100% of the time, but this is a start. I also wonder how well the Pilot Earpiece will be able to translate phrases that don’t directly translate. I know that Google has gotten better with that. For example the phrase “sweet dreams” in Italian isn’t an exact translation. We say it as “sogni di oro,” which literally means “golden dreams.” I think the only way any translating device is going to bridge that gap is if it is language specific. So say there’s a Pilot Earpiece that focuses in and studies one language for extended amount of time and hopefully has someone who reviews the translations that is a native speaker. I think with that will comes with a major price bump, but I’d rather pay more for excellent translating than a lower price for mediocre translating.

Japanese, for instance, has a different sentence structure to English and translations are very hard to do accurately. Here is an example of a Japanese paragraph translated via Google Translate:
“I read in the book and the Yeah Tei from childhood and the workings of the brain becomes better mother, such as when the diapers, or cause so gripped the finger to 璃花Ko’s, not give stimulation or hanging with a hand It was it is. We realized that grow up athletic ability from “hold power.”
If you can make heads or tails of that then you’re a better person than I am! I think most English speakers would be looking at the person speaking that with the same puzzled look they would have if they didn’t have the translator in their ear at all. So I can see it being completely useless for some languages.
